Republican Governatorial candidate Jerry Kilgore was fined for deceptive advertising today. Democratic candidate Tim Kaine was fined for the same technique on friday. Jerry Kilgore's ad was much more deceptive and this wasn't the first time Kilgore's campaign used deceptive advertising.
This was
reported today on NBC29 (Charlottesville).
I wrote to NBC29 this weekend, via their submit a story form, about their inconsistent coverage between Kilgore's and Kaine's transgressions indicating that since they
covered Kaine's deceptive practices
but only mentioned Kilgore's in passing, that they must do a story focussing on Kilgore's and mention Kaine's in passing for balance. I included a link to this
comment I posted on dailykos. They did not cover the more egregious nature of Kilgore's ad though they did mention the hypocracy of
Republicans complaining about Kaine's ad while using the same technique themselves. Taken together, the two stories are not balanced since the first only mentioned Kilgore in passing and the second mentioned Kaine frequently. By itself, the second story was fairly balanced if you don't weight the differences in magnitude of the transgressions.
I do not know how NBC29 would have handled this story if I had not written; would they have let it slide till after the election? A search for "(kilgore OR kaine) fined" on google news shows that neither fine received much coverage.
